Smoky Quartz
Smoky quartz or smoky crystal, is a brown-gray transparent to translucent variety of quartz. Owes its color to the free silica formed by silicon oxide by natural radiation.
It is a mineralogical component of acidic eruptive rocks, as well as metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.
Gold rutile fibers are often trapped in smoky quartz. Smoky quartz was protecting the house from magic and negative energy during the Middle Ages.
Morion, in gemology, is the very dark, almost opaque variety of smoky quartz, but gives the name in all smoky quartz stones in Germany, Poland, Denmark and Spain. In the mountains of Cairngorm, Scotland, we find the brown-yellow Cairngorm quartz smoke, used by local craftsmen to make jewellery and ornaments on local costumes, mainly as a kilt safety pin.
The Chinese, from the 12th century, were using glasses of smoky quartz to protect the eyes from the sun.
The best quality smoky quartz is found in Brazil, but generally smoky quartz is found all over the world. India, China and Nevada in the USA are countries of good quality mineral extraction.
