Blue Topaz
Topaz is a silicate, or aluminum fluoride mineral with an octahedral orthorhombic crystalline structure that peaks in a pyramid shape.
Stone known since antiquity; topaz is especially beloved in ancient Greece.
In Mesopotamia and Africa blue topaz was a very popular stone for amulets. In the Old Testament, Job characteristically says that "the value of wisdom exceeds the value of the topaz of Ethiopia."
An ancient mineral mine, mainly peridot and a colorless variety of topaz, was found on the island of Zabargan in the Red Sea, known in antiquity by the Greek name Topazios.
Today excellent topaz is mined in mines in the Czech Republic, Norway, Italy and elsewhere. Pink topaz is found in Pakistan and Afghanistan, blue topaz in Brazil mainly in the province of Minas Gerais. The largest blue topaz, in a rare deep blue color, is "Ostro", a topaz that weights 9381 carats (1876 grams). It is now exhibited in the Natural History Museum in London donated by multimillionaire Maurice Ostro. It was mined in the 1980s at the Minas Gerais mines in Brazil and is a stone with great value.
